The Sci-Fi Film School #37 - Barbarella


On this episode of The Sci-Fi Film School we review the 1968 Sexploitation film Barbarella.





After an in-flight anti-gravity striptease (masked by the film's opening titles), Barbarella, a 41st century astronaut, lands on the planet Lythion and sets out to find the evil Durand Durand in the city of Sogo, where a new sin is invented every hour. There, she encounters such objects as the Excessive Machine, a genuine sex organ on which an accomplished artist of the keyboard, in this case, Durand Durand himself, can drive a victim to death by pleasure, a lesbian queen who, in her dream chamber, can make her fantasies take form, and a group of ladies smoking a giant hookah which, via a poor victim struggling in its glass globe, dispenses Essence of Man.
Based on the popular French comic strip.

Starring Jane Fonda, John Phillip Law, Anita Pallenberg, Milo O'Shea & Marcel Marceau.

Rated R, Barbarella was released on October 10th, 1968 with a run time of 98 minutes.  It's estimated budget was 9 Million dollars.

The Sci-Fi Film School #36 - Equilibrium

On this episode of The Sci-Fi Film School we review the 2002 dystopian action adventure thriller Equilibrium.



In a futuristic world, a strict regime has eliminated war by suppressing emotions: books, art and music are strictly forbidden and feeling is a crime punishable by death. Cleric John Preston is a top ranking government agent responsible for destroying those who resist the rules. When he misses a dose of Prozium, a mind-altering drug that hinders emotion, Preston, who has been trained to enforce the strict laws of the new regime, suddenly becomes the only person capable of overthrowing it.

The Sci-Fi Film School #35 - The American Astronaut

On this episode of The Sci-Fi Film School we review the 2001 space-western/musical The American Astronaut.



Space travel has become a dirty way of life dominated by derelicts, grease monkeys, thieves, and hard-boiled interplanetary traders such as Samuel Curtis, an astronaut from Earth who deals in a rare goods, living or otherwise. His mission begins with the unlikely delivery of a cat to a small outer-belt asteroid saloon where he meets his former dance partner, and renowned interplanetary fruit thief, the Blueberry Pirate. As payment for his delivery of the cat, Curtis receives a homemade cloning device already in the process of creating a creature most rare in this space quadrant... a Real Live Girl. At the suggestion of the Blueberry Pirate, Curtis takes the Real Live Girl to Jupiter where women have long been a mystery. There, he proposes a trade with the owner of Jupiter: the Real Live Girl clone for the Boy Who Actually Saw A Woman's Breast. The Boy Who Actually Saw A Woman's Breast is regarded as royalty on the all-male mining planet of Jupiter because of his unique and exotic experience.

Cory McAbee wrote and starred in it as Samuel Curtis, along with Rocco Sisto as Professor Hess, Gregory Russell Cook at The Boy Who Actually Saw a Woman’s Breast, Annie Golden as Cloris and Joshua Taylor as Blueberry Pirate.

The movie was made for between 1 and 2 Million dollars.

The band Billy Nayer Show, helmed by McAbee, wrote and performed the film's soundtrack.

The Sci-Fi Film School #31 - Iron Sky

On this return episode of The Sci-Fi Film School we review the 2012 movie Iron Sky.



A 2012 Finnish-German-Australian produced film that tells the story of Nazi Germans who, after being defeated in 1945, fled to the Moon where they built a space fleet to return years later to conquer Earth.

Iron Sky was theatrically released throughout Europe in April 2012. It was shown on select screens in the U.S. as well.

Rated R for language and some violence it runs 93 minutes.

It was filmed on location in the U.S., Australia, Germany and Finland.

The movie had a budget of about 9 Million dollars and just about broke even at the box office.

Last year it was announced that there are plans for a prequel and sequel.

The Sci-Fi Film School #29 - Plan 9 From Outer Space



On this episode of The Sci-Fi Film School, we talk about the 1959 b-movie classic Plan 9 From Outer Space.







Written and directed by Edward D. Wood Jr. and starring Gregory Walcott, Mona McKinnon, Tor Johnson and Maila "Vampira" Nurmi. The film bills Bela Lugosi posthumously as a star, although silent footage of the actor had been shot by Wood for other, unfinished projects just before Lugosi's death in 1956.

In California, an old man (Lugosi) grieves the loss of his wife (Vampira) and on the next day he also dies. However, the space soldier Eros and her mate Tanna use an electric device to resurrect them both and the strong Inspector Clay (Tor Johnson) that was murdered by the couple. Their intention is not to conquest Earth but to stop mankind from developing the powerful bomb "Solobonite" that would threaten the universe. When the population of Hollywood and Washington DC sees flying saucers on the sky, a colonel, a police lieutenant, a commercial pilot, his wife and a policeman try to stop the aliens.

Released on July 22nd, 1959, Plan 9 From Outer Space ran 79 minutes and was made on a budget of $60,000.

It has an IMDB rating of Ratings: 3.8 out of 10.

Rated R, the movie ran 98 minutes and cost 8.5 Million to make.  On Rotten Tomatoes, critics give it a 32 percent rating, while the audience gives it 73 percent.

The Sci-Fi Film School #20 - Firefly episode "Serenity"

On this episode of The Sci-Fi Film School, Matt and Dave discuss the 2002 episode Serenity of the short lived television series Firefly.



Serenity is the two-hour pilot for the television series Firefly created by Joss Whedon. However, Fox executives were not satisfied with it as a way to debut the series so instead, "The Train Job" was created as a second pilot and was the first episode of the series aired.

"Serenity" was not aired until the end of the series' run. This episode shares its name with the feature film Serenity, which continues the series after the final episode.

Malcolm Reynolds and Zoe Washburne are survivors of their rebel unit in the Battle of Serenity Valley during the Unification War, in which their side lost. They are now eking out an existence on the edges of space in their Firefly-class spaceship Serenity, taking odd jobs even if they involve petty crime. They take on passengers to supplement their income, but one has a secret that makes their lives more difficult.

In a futuristic society where corporations have replaced countries, the violent game of Rollerball is used to control the populace by demonstrating the futility of individuality. However, one player, Jonathan E., rises to the top, and fights for his personal freedom and threatens the corporate control. 

The screenplay was written by William Harrison, and was adapted from his own short story "Roller Ball Murder" that first appeared in a 1973 issue of Esquire magazine.

It’s a 2004 action/adventure/mystery starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, Giovanni Ribisi, Michael Gambon, Bai Ling, Sir Laurence Olivier and Angelina Jolie.

From IMDB - In 1939, an intrepid reporter in New York City makes a connection between the story she's covering-- of famous scientists suddenly disappearing around the world, and a recent attack on the city by giant robots. Determined to find the solution to these happenings, she seeks the help of her ex-boyfriend, the captain of a mercenary legion of pilots. The two are investigating the case when the robots attack the city again, though in a stroke of luck, Sky Captain's right hand man is able to locate their source. They then set off on an adventure in search of the evil mastermind behind these schemes, who is bent on creating a utopia and destroying the current world.

Written and directed by Kerry Conran, this film was shot on a budget of $40 million but it only grossed $37 million. Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow was distributed by Paramount and rated PG. It had a run time of 106 minutes. 6.2 out of 10 rating on IMDB.

The Sci-Fi Film School #17 - Clockwork Orange

On this episode of The Sci-Fi Film School, Matt and Dave discuss the movie A Clockwork Orange then stick around for the "test" to find out how much you learned.



It’s a 1971 film adaptation of the Anthony Burgess 1962 novel of the same name, which was written, directed and produced by Stanley Kubrick. The film features disturbing, violent images, facilitating its social commentary on psychiatry, youth gangs, and other social, political, and economic subjects in a dystopian, future Britain.

A Clockwork Orange features a soundtrack comprising mostly classical music selections and Moog synthesizer compositions by Walter Carlos. The now-iconic poster of A Clockwork Orange was created by designer Bill Gold.

The movie starred Malcolm McDowell, Godfrey Quigley, Anthony Sharp, Patrick Magee and Warren Clarke. Distributed and released by Warner Bros on January 13th, 1971, the film ran 137 minutes. Was made for 2.2 Million and grossed over $26 million.

Santa Claus is a 1959 live action Mexican motion picture featuring Santa Claus.

In the film, Santa works in outer space and does battle with a demon sent to Earth by Lucifer to ruin Christmas by killing Santa and "making all the children of the Earth do evil." Santa Claus was directed by René Cardona and written by Cardona and Adolfo Torres Portillo. The original film was produced in Mexico and features primarily Spanish dialog. A dubbed and slightly edited English language version was produced for U.S. release in 1960. - More

In this episode of the Sci-Fi Film School Podcast, Matt and Dave discuss the 1964 holiday movie Santa Claus Conquers the Martians.



Santa Claus Conquers the Martians is a 1964 science fiction film that regularly appears on lists of the worst films ever made. It was directed by Nicholas Webster, and stars John Call as Santa Claus. It also includes an 8-year-old Pia Zadora playing the role of one of the Martian children.

The film took on newfound fame in the 1990s after being featured on an episode of the comedy series Mystery Science Theater 3000.

Martians, upset that their children have become obsessed with TV shows from Earth which extol the virtues of Santa Claus, start an expedition to Earth to kidnap the one and only Santa.

While on Earth, they kidnap two lively children that lead the group of Martians to the North Pole and Santa. The Martians then take Santa and the two children back to Mars with them. - More

The Sci-Fi Film School #13 - The Terminator

On this episode of The Sci-Fi Film School Podcast Matt and Dave talk about the 1984 movie The Terminator.



The Terminator is a 1984 film directed by James Cameron and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Michael Biehn, Linda Hamilton, Paul Winfield and Lance Henrikson.

Schwarzenegger plays the Terminator, a cyborg assassin sent back in time from the year 2029 to 1984 to kill Sarah Connor, played by Hamilton. Biehn plays Kyle Reese, a soldier from the future sent back in time to protect Sarah.

Released by Orion Pictures on October 26th, 1984, the movie was rated R and ran 107 minutes.

The Terminator was made for 6.5 Million dollars and made $78 Million at the box office.

The Sci-Fi Film School #12 - Ghosts Of Mars

On this episode of The Sci-Fi Film School Podcast, Matt and Dave discuss the movie Ghosts Of Mars.



John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars is a 2001 science fiction action horror film written and directed by John Carpenter. The film stars Ice Cube, Natasha Henstridge, Jason Statham, Pam Grier, Clea DuVall, and Joanna Cassidy.

Set in the second half of the 22nd century, the story concerns a security team on Mars sent to pick up and transport a prisoner named Desolation Williams. Arriving at a remote mining town where he was being held, they find virtually all of the people missing and learn that an underground doorway created by an ancient Martian civilization was discovered. When it was opened, "ghosts" or disembodied spirits were released, which went on to possess the miners.

On this edition of the Sci-Fi Film School Podcast Matt and Dave discuss the 1995 made for TV movie The Langoliers.



On a red eye flight to Boston from LA 10 people wake up to a shock; all the passengers and crew have vanished. They land the plane only to discover that things haven't changed, but its like the world is dead. No one is there, the air is still, sound doesn't echo and the food is tasteless. A sound is heard in the distance coming closer and turns out to be a race of monstrous beings bent on the passengers' destruction.

Starring Patricia Wettig, Dean Stockwell, David Morse, Mark Lindsay Chapman, and Bronson Pinchot, this adaptation of a Stephen King story was a made for TV mini-series that aired on ABC in 1995. - More

This time around Matt and Dave discuss the 2010 movie Tron: Legacy



Tron: Legacy - A sequel to the 1982 film Tron with Jeff Bridges reprising his roles as Kevin Flynn and CLU along with Bruce Boxleitner back as Alan Bradley and Tron. This movie also starred Garrett Hedlund as Sam Flynn and Olivia Wilde as Quorra.

In 1989, Kevin Flynn, the innovative software engineer and the CEO of ENCOM, disappears. Twenty years later, his son, Sam, now ENCOM's controlling shareholder, takes little interest in the company besides an annual practical joke on the board of directors. One night Sam is visited by his father's friend Alan Bradley, urging Sam to investigate a mysterious page originating from Flynn's abandoned arcade. There, Sam discovers a concealed computer laboratory and unintentionally teleports himself to the Grid, a virtual reality created by his father.

The Sci-Fi Film School #5 - Pitch Black

On this episode we discuss the 2000 Vin Diesel movie Pitch Black



Pitch Black (also known as The Chronicles of Riddick: Pitch Black) is a year 2000 science fiction thriller film directed by David Twohy and is recognized as the acting breakthrough of Vin Diesel.

In the film, dangerous criminal Richard B. Riddick (Vin Diesel) is being transported to prison in a cargo spacecraft. When the spaceship is damaged bycomet debris and makes an emergency crash landing on an empty desert planet, Riddick escapes. However, when predatory flying alien creatures begin attacking the survivors, Riddick joins forces with the crew to develop a plan to escape the planet.

The Sci-Fi Film School #4 - Doctor Who "Rose"

This time around we discuss the episode that re-booted the Doctor Who television franchise in 2005 called "Rose".




This is the episode that re-launched the Doctor Who franchise after being off the air since a made for TV movie in 1996. Rose premiered on March 26th, 2005.

Rose Tyler meets a mysterious stranger called The Doctor in the basement of the department store where she works while being attacked by shop window dummies called Autons. She then starts to investigate him and, in the process, uncovers an alien plot by the Nestene Consciousness to take over the Earth. Both Rose and The Doctor manage to beat the invasion together and she accepts his offer to travel with him in the TARDIS which travels through time and space.
